Less is more (more or less)

Less is more (more or less)

Less is more  and   it’s better to be good than to be original  said Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and he was not the only one who said that simplicity and clarity lead to good design.

But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful when you are saying too much and getting ignored. Less is better, because it concentrates on the essential aspect, and the “products” are not burdened with no-essential.

Brevity in communication is more effective than verbosity (remove to improve). The human mind is built for approximations. We’re limited creatures, only able to handle a few thoughts at once — make them count!

………………………………………………………………………………………………….

     Progress means simplifying, not complicating.

………………………………………………………Bruno Munari

Behind the scenes it’s the real creative process, the “delicate” balance-work involved in simplifying the complex and accept the fact that some things can never be made simple.

It’s art in its purest form!

A ‘special’ or ‘successful’ design needs to maintain this balance of simplicity and complexity but also function well and be aesthetically amazing.

A similar “less is more” attitude can work in many fields from writing, lifestyle, saving lives, earning money, ice cream and soccer cards.  What we want is less noise, more context, ease of use, ease of access and the certainty that our listeners understand the message.

… btw there are still some areas where, I would claim, bigger may actually be better; where less is more.
